FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What size are the firewood logs?
A. The logs are on average 25cm (9 3/4″) long and are split into practical sizes for use in wood burning stoves (we can supply larger logs, details on request)
Q. What is the moisture content of your firewood logs?
A. The logs are dried uniformly to average 20% moisture content.
Q. How can I tell if your firewood logs are good value compared to other sellers?
A. Long answer
Firewood logs are sold by different measures of weight and volume and from a wide range of timber species, this causes problems when trying to compare suppliers.
We do not want to sell our wood by weight as the dryer it is the lighter it will be and so would not compare favourably in weight terms with inferior wetter logs – between 35% and 65% of the weight of fresh felled wood is water. Beware of suppliers that offer a “ton” of logs, on average it would require a solid meter cube of timber fresh felled to produce that weight – 50% more when seasoned and even more when kiln dried, this will give twice the volume when split and delivered loose, will that really fit in the small builders bag or pickup that is being supplied?!
The problem with selling it by volume is there are different ways of measurement;
Solid wood volume assumes no spaces at all between the logs ie volume of solid timber before processing.
Stacked volume is the space taken up when the logs are carefully stacked by hand, like in our small bags.
Loose volume which is the space taken up if for instance sold in a bulk bag.
As a general guide 1 solid cubic metre of timber will occupy 1.3 cubic metres split and carefully stacked and 2 cubic metres split and tipped loose
The problem of selling it by “the load” is that vehicles come in lots of different sizes and may not always be filled to the same level.
We sell our logs by in plastic bags, the dimensions of which are approximately 24” high x 10” wide x 7” deep (60cm x 25cm x 18cm), by the 1.2m3 bulk bag (which contains approximately the same amount of logs as 27 small bags) and by the 1.6m3 bulk bag (which contains approximately the same amount of logs as 37 small bags). The amount is consistant and allows comparison against other suppliers using the same packaging.
All of our logs are from hardwood timber trees, mostly ash, beech, hornbeam and oak, we do not sell softwoods.
Ideally we would charge by heat output as this would show what good value our logs are.
A The short answer
We suggest the best way to find out if you agree our logs are the best value around is try some and see for yourself.!
Q. Can I collect logs from you?
A. No, but we can deliver to your home please see our home deliveries page, or you can purchase our logs from the businesses listed on the retailers page.
Q. Are your logs certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council?
A. No, the logs are from sustainable well managed forests but our experience of FSC UK from its inception has raised issues that we are not comfortable with. The news that over the last 10 years up to 35% of the felled area of Forestry Commission woods in Wales remain unplanted despite being certified by FSC have added to our concerns that there is not a level playing field between large and small timber growers.
